Sonic Blume: Live at Arlene’s Grocery

Review by Grace Shaver // Manhattan // 11.23.19

Arlene’s Grocery is the perfect spot for underground musicians to perform in NYC. The venue is quite literally underground; the stage is in a basement. However, the laid-back nature of the venue does not affect the energy artists are able to bring to Arlene’s. This past Saturday, spirits were high as Sonic Blume returned to Manhattan. If there is anything definite about Sonic Blume and their career, it’s that their music is too good to continue on as a hidden gem. They’ve already gained international traction, with their single Pink Boots having been played on radio stations worldwide and featured on fellow indie artist, girl in red’s, “vintersolverv // sommersolverv” Spotify playlist.

The afternoon of music began with lovely performances from two other promising musicians: quinnie and j solomon. Both delivered solid sets that were enjoyed by everyone. Sonic Blume’s performance was heavily anticipated and most definitely worth the wait. By the time Sonic Blume graced the stage at Arlene’s, the intimate space was completely packed. I’ve seen Sonic Blume multiple times and they always deliver. In fact, I don’t think they’ve ever given a poor performance. They’re incredibly talented and ever-evolving. Whether you listen to their recorded tracks or see them live, if you enjoy new-wave, retro-pop, you’ll enjoy Sonic Blume.

Sonic Blume is refreshing. They’re uniquely them. If you were to play their songs for a friend who had never heard them before, they would be able to recognize that each song came

from the same band. Although their discography is cohesive, it isn’t boring. They’re innovative and exciting; they’re not just producing the same song again and again. Plus, they’re young! As they’ve grown and matured, their music has too. Recently, I’ve noticed a stylistic shift to introducing more lyrics alongside their classic, dreamy instrumentals. Whether they release a cover or an original, their product always has their ‘Sonic Blume signature.’ A grounding beat, guitar and bass riffs, synth, and soft vocals are staples. Their sound is versatile, but feels familiar- it’s simply comforting. Sonic Blume makes music you can listen to while driving with the windows down or laying in bed on a rainy Sunday and everything in between. Seeing them live encapsulates every feeling you experience while listening to them on your own. They always perform to their fullest ability, and by doing so, they capture their audience’s undivided attention, encouraging crowds to be present and enjoy themselves.

Their commitment to their live performances is only one aspect of what makes Sonic Blume so great. It’s truly always a pleasure to listen to them or see them perform and I look

forward to listening and seeing them for years to come. I truly wish them nothing but success.

Their devotion to creating great music is reason enough to support them in their future endeavors.
