Peach Pit’s “Feelin Low (F*ckboy Blues)”

Review by Kendall Polidori

Vancouver’s most beloved Peach Pit boys are back with their latest single “Feelin’ Low (F*ckboy Blues) after nearly two years of recording their sophomore album, set to release in its entirety later this month.

Made available Nov.1, the quartet’s newest single introduces a new era for the group, both soundwise and visually, with a “lucha libre” image sure to rile up fans.

The high school sweethearts made a name for themselves in 2016 with their self-titled single “Peach Pit,” and since then have captured the ears, eyes and hearts of indie-pop lovers from all over. And now with their latest single, they are pulling people in even more, especially with a change of pace to their usual sound.

With their debut album, “Being So Normal,” featuring a majority of slower, more mellow songs perfect for winding down to, Pitch Pit surely changes up the mood with “Feelin’ Low (F*ckboy Blues),” bringing a more upbeat, bluesy approach to their sound, even hinting at the transition in the song’s title.

Recently on Instagram, the band posted a photo to promote their latest single and said the track was originally intended to be on their debut album as an acoustic version. But, the band decided to hold it off because “Tommy’s Party” felt like a better kicker. After reworking and recording a new version of the song, though, “it only felt right to release first as a bridge between old and new music.”

And the perfect bridge to new music it is indeed.

With a variety of complimentary guitar riffs and and an added amount of distortion, “Feelin’ Low (F*ckboy Blues)” is the missing piece to the band’s sound puzzle, hitting all the right notes. After about five strums on the guitar, Neil Smith’s smooth, and just a tad raspy, vocal cords ease in telling people very simply how it is, “I want something always.”

Right off the bat, the song transported me back to 2011 Foo Fighter’s “These Days,” giving the band a major alternative rock vibe, a category they have not quite been labeled as yet. And although they have not been around for more than four years, Peach Pit feels like the comfort of an old friend. Only this time with their new release, rather than chilling in the basement with them talking about life, you are jamming in the garage right along with them, demanding for change to happen.

“Feelin’ Low (F*boy Blues) is an ode to the band’s most energetic parts of themselves, giving them the room to bare all and welcome anyone who wants to join in. And from the sounds, and looks, of thefirst single off their upcoming album, Peach Pit is ready to deliver even more.

Check out their latest single, and prepare yourself for more Vancouver-based goodness, with a hopeful tour in sight that will give you a night of nonstop dancing and sweatiness you really need.
